Melasma

Overview

Melasma appears in dark patches with a border and appears mainly on the forehead, cheeks and whole face but can affect the back and arms. It is mainly found in women due to hormonal changes, pregnancy and thyroid. It can also present in healthy adults.

Causes of Melasma

Pigmentation occurs when the sun (UV rays) hits the skin and stimulates melanocyte cells and triggers melanin to come to the surface causing pigmentation without protection.

The main causes are:

  • Pregnancy
  • Hormone treatments
  • Certain medications
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Sun exposure
  • Genetics
