Acne affects more than 80% of the people between the ages of 11 and 40 years. Acne can cause self-esteem issues, emotional distress and scars the skin.
Acne is a skin condition caused by inflammation of the oil glands under the skin. Isolated pimples are formed in the same way as full – blown acne. The earlier you start treatment, the lower your risk of such problems.
You may have heard of the term ‘back acne’ – this is when acne specifically affects the back and is very common amongst both men and women and can be very painful. It can also affect daily life, like going to the gym, beach, work, socialising and wearing certain types of clothing (vests, backless dresses, etc.) All of these things in turn can be detrimental to your self-esteem.
Puberty – excess amounts of testosterone producing too much oil under your skin, blocking pores and hair follicles. In puberty acne often appears in the T-zone, forehead, nose, and chin.
Hormonal adult acne – typically forms on the lower part of your face. This includes the bottom of your cheeks and around your jawline.
Pre-menopause / Menopause – during this later time in life the skin’s sebaceous (oil) glands go into overdrive, producing excess sebum. This is likely due to a drop in estrogen levels or an increase in androgen hormones like testosterone. The problem is further exacerbated by the slowed-down cell regeneration in older skin.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is also known to cause hormonal acne due to the abnormal hormonal changes. It causes symptoms such as irregular periods, facial hair, and weight gain.
Medication – medications such as corticosteroids, lithium, or androgens can cause acne as a side effect.
If your blood relative had adult acne then unfortunately you are more likely to get acne.
Foods such as chocolate, fried foods, pizza, caffeine, or dairy may cause acne. There is no real evidence to prove that our dietary choices make a huge difference in the severity of acne. However some people really do notice that their skin reacts badly after they have eaten certain foods.
Over washing and harsh chemical products can cause acne and make it worse. It causes skin to become dry and produce more oil to lubricate the skin.
